PLANTING GROUNDCOVERS UP TO 3' HIGH IN CALIFORNIA

I like using ground covers to define the edge of a border or to just add some low growing interest in front of a taller plant. Whatever the use, these California native plants get up to 3' high and are a fun way to add interest. In the right picture my client in Costa Mesa had an existing tree that we potted and put a lot of low growing ground covers to add some color punch and interest. You are not limited in your options or your creativity.

Below is a list of California native groundcovers up to 3' high.

  • Arctostaphylos 'Carmel Sur'
  • Arctostaphylos 'Emerald Carpet'
  • Arctostaphylos 'Pacific Mist'
  • Arctostaphylos 'Point Reyes'
  • Artemisia californica 'Canyon Gray'
  • Artemisia californica 'Montara'
  • Baccharis pilularis 'Pigeon Point'
  • Baccharis pilularis 'Twin Peaks'
  • Ceanothus 'Joyce Coulter'
  • Ceanothus maritimus
  • Ceanothus 'Point Reyes'
  • Ceanothus 'Yankee Point' (right picture)
  • Epilobium californicum
  • Erigeron karvinskianus
  • Eriogonum fasciculatus 'Dana Point'
  • Eriogonum parvifolium
  • Fragaria californica
  • Iva hayesiana
  • Oenothera speciosa 'Rosea'

Really good choices and a beautiful photo. I love Pigeon Point - in big drifts or in small areas. This is a real favorite for a variety of situations.

Evergreen groundcovers aren't the stars of the garden, but they help keep the green going into the winter months. Fast Growing Tree Nursery
