REPLACING A DEAD PLANT

Although I have a green thumb, that does not mean that it is always green.  Sometimes my thumb turns brown and a plant dies.  In this case an indoor plant in a funky pot.  Join me as I take you on a journey to buy a new plant and redo the pot.

I bought the pot of off Etsy and sadly the seller is no longer on the platform and I cannot link you to the listing.

SMALL SPACE GARDENING

If you think that you cannot garden because you have a small space, then think again.  I live in a 424 square foot house with only a 100 square foot pad of concrete outside my front door to garden in.  In this short video I show you my garden.  There is room to dine and lounge.  There is even a potting bench.

I KILLED MY CEANOTHUS

Recently, I revamped my garden and in that time I had a Ceanothus that I transplanted into a bigger pot.  I thought for sure that it would survive but sadly, it did not.  So what do I replace it with?  I could just replace it with another Ceanothus or perhaps something else.  I have yet to figure that out.  In the meantime I thought I would show you my dead plant.  Hah!  You can watch the video of my garden revamp here...  garden revamp video

MY GARDEN REVAMP OCTOBER 2022

Recently, I found myself unhappy with the state of my garden.  Things that worked in the past were no longer working.  It was time for a change and time to replace some dead plants.  I had a plan in mind that shifted as I got to work.

The only clear thing was that I was going to by everything (plants excluded) second hand.  I did not need a lot of stuff but just a few things.  I also wanted to consolidate some of the pots I had.

The chair, rug and side table I purchased from Facebook marketplace, the edible plants are from Plant Depot and the natives are from Tree of Life.

MY GARDEN MAKEOEVER JUNE 2022

I am that person that is not perfect, nor do I believe in such.  I make mistakes and sometimes I have a plant or two that has died.  This tragedy called for a refresh of my garden.  A much needed new life that had to be brought to the space.

I started by bribing a friend with some lunch to come help me clean the space.  We literally took everything out of the space and cleaned.  Then put things back with the assumption of editing.  I had a bunch of metal planters that were rotted out that I left by the dumpster.  We have an unspoken rule in my condo complex that anything left by the dumpster is fare game.  Trust me they were gone in less than an hour.

Then I took a few days to really just sleep on it and decide what plants I wanted.  My thought was to have a garden that was California native and edible California native.   This garden is an evolution and knowing me there may be more pots and plants added.

The plants I used are as follows...

  • Ceanothus 'Blue Cascade' - Blue Cascade Ceanothus
  • Clinopodium douglasii - Yerba Buena
  • Various species of Dudleya
  • Eriogonum cinereum - Ashyleaf Buckweat
  • Fragaria chiloensis - Beach Strawberry
  • Monardella odoratisisma - Mountain Coyote Mint
  • Salvia cedrosensis - Cedros Island Sage
All of my plant are from Tree Of Life Nursery  and most of the pottery is from Plant Depot.

KITCHEN LIGHT MAKEOVER

After having my kitchen countertop done, it became clear the the light would also have to be done.  The florescent uglyness just had to go.  I knew that although it would be an extra expense, it would also be a nice addition to my property value and overall look of my home.

MY NEW KITCHEN COUNTERTOP

I moved into this condo in March of 2016 and overtime I slowly redid parts of my home.  I did not have the budget to redo everything at once but new that there were things that I could not live with long term.  This years redo project was the kitchen countertop.

What was once a mixture of formica and laminate has now thanks to Stone Age, been transformed into the most gorgeous quartz.   I love the new look and how airy it has made the space feel.

Some of the materials that I purchased are:

REVAMPING MY AEROGARDEN

I love gardening and being able to grow my own food.  There is a thrill that I get from picking herbs off of my own garden.  Cooking with them and not having to spend money buying them.  In this video I revamp my Aerogarden and show you what I have done.

For those of you that are interested in indoor aeroponic gardening then I would highly recommend you purchase your own Aerogarden.  I should also mention that I live in a 424 square foot space.  Yet I can garden.  So can you.

A DAY OF GARDENING IN MY GARDEN

I love gardening.  Although all I have is a 100 square feet pad of concrete, I still try to make it work.  Somehow so that I can have plants.  I would possibly loose my mind if I could not have a garden.  So, in this video I take you along with me as I plant pots.  Both for indoors and outdoors.

As you will see in this video I have lots of plants, but intend to add more and more and...  Seriously though, I challenge any of you with even a small amount of space to consider having some sort of garden.  Getting your fingers in the dirt will help you soul.  There is just something about it.

PATIO REFRESH JULY 2021

I recently did a refresh of my garden, adding way too many plants.  Hah! That's how a garden should be right?  A mixture of colors, textures and things that are loved by the garden care taker.  Things will no doubt evolve as I plan to add more.  Since I cannot literally live in a jungle then I will create my own unique version.

CAT ROOM MAKEOVER

I had turned my pantry in my 424 square foot condo into a cat room when I first moved into this place 5 years ago.  Then in 2020 I had the idea to give this room a makeover but many things happened that took me in a different direction.  Finally this year after the passing of my cat Doti, I decided to just to it.  Now my only cat Mylo has his own man cave.

UPDATED PATIO TOUR DECEMBER 2020

I believe that gardening is much like a science lab.  You play around with things until you find a system that works for you.  But even then, things still evolve and change as you grow and evolve.  In this video I show you my updated patio tour.  Enjoy!

CAT ROOM MAKEOVER

When I moved into this condo I knew that I would not be in need of the pantry.  Rather then letting the space get wasted, I decided to turn it into a cat room.  The perfect place for the litter, food etc.  In this video I show you how I revamped it a bit.

MY GARDEN VISITOR

I have a 100 square foot pad of concrete outside my front door that is essentially, my garden.  The only space I have in my 424 square foot condo to do any sort of gardening.  Although at the moment I have no plants in my pots (planning to soon) I still do get some visitors in my garden.  Normally, it's the spiders and such that come to say hello.  But this time it was Arleesha the praying mantis.  I named her Arleesha because the name was in my head and I had to give her a name of some sort.

She was hanging on the inside of my security door.  I am not sure how she got there since I never leave that door wide open.  But somehow she did.  She was mesmerizing and I just could not stop staring at her.  As far as I am aware this is the first time I had seen one in real life.  She was calm, cool, collected and had a way about her.  As if she did not give two shits about others and how slow or fast they moved.  She was moving to her own beat.

I knew she was there for a reason.  To remind me to be calm, patient yet introspective.  She slowly move to the outside of the door.  As I closed the door, she jumped on the ground and just sat there.  I had to leave for a client meeting and to run some errands.  When I returned hours later, she was still around.  This time she was hanging off of a decorative metal ornament that have resting on a table.  She was swaying back and forth.  Much like you do when your favorite song is playing and you are moving to it's beat.  Although I never saw her again, she will never be forgotten.  Maybe if I get my ass in gear and finish my garden, then she may return.

PATIO GARDEN UPDATE FEB. 2019

Sadly I had let my patio go to the waste side.  I had neglected to clean and care for it, until the rains came and made things much more messier than ever.  I decided at the very least, I would clean and bring it to some sort of normalcy.  In the next couple of months I will be making some changes

INDOOR CAT ROOM TOUR 2018

I live in a 424 square foot condo and don't really have use for the storage spaces that came with the condo.  Even the pantry is of no use to me.  I live a zero waster lifestyle, which means that don't buy food that is packed.  In plastic or cans I just don't buy them.  This means I had a nice size pantry to do something with and since I have two cat I thought, hey what about a cat room.

INDOOR PLANT TOUR FALL 2018

I live in a 424 square feet condo and love it.  What I love most about my condo besides the size is that I have 40+ plants in it.  I love the feeling of living in a jungle being surrounded by nature.  There is also something about waking up with living plants around me that makes me feel at ease.  In this video I share with you all my indoor plants.

INDOOR GARDEN TOUR DECEMBER 2017

Having indoor plants are key not just for indoor air quality but also for ones soul.  I love having growing plants indoors to bring some life into the space.  My cats also love it (haha).  In my 424 square foot condo I have a total of 38 pots of plants.  So if I can have that many in my small space then you surely can have a few in yours.  Adding greenery just changes things and makes the mood better.

Just adding a few can give your space a lively-er vibe.  In this video I show you all the indoor plants I have. If you are interested in having indoor plants and you live in south Cali, then I highly recommend you visit OC Succulents/California greenhouse.  As far as I am aware they have the largest selection of indoor plants along with tons of succulent options.

If you live in Orange County and want some guidance on what indoor plants will work best for you then simply email me and I would be happy to give you a consultation (for a small fee) and get you started on your indoor gardening journey.

Some things to consider if you are going to  have indoor plants...

  • You will have to water at least weekly.
  • You can get creative with your containers (as you can see in the photo).
  • If you have cats they may chew on some of the plants (mine do) but that should not worry you.
  • You are only limited by your imagination.
  • You don't have to have just pots of plants but you can also garden upwards.

GROWING CALIFORNIA NATIVE PLANTS WITH HERS EXPERIMENT

Can California native plants grow in the same pot as herbs?  Well this is an experiment that I am trying.  On the one hand I love the idea of growing California native plants but on the other hand I also love the idea of growing herbs that I use often in cooking.  Since my garden is only 100 square feet, I have to get creative.  It is also a no land garden.  Meaning that there is no land to plant in.  No matter what I do, it will have to be in pots.

I have three pots.  A 15, 12 and 10 inch that bought at Plant Depot.  The plants are from Tree of Life Nursery and Green thumb Nursery.  In one 12" pot I planted some Ceanothus concha with a Dudleya and Yerba Buena.   In the 15" pot I planted a Pacific Wax Myrtle with a Dudleya and some Cilantro.  In the 10" pot I planted a Japatul Cleveland Sage with a Dudleya and Chives.  Watch the video to learn more about this experiment and to see a sneak peak at my patio garden.
