In this case the project is a minimalistic design that also uses palm springs gold decomposed granite from South West Boulder and Stone as the mulch. This color of dg mimics the look of beach sand.

This is the original video that I made about the project.

This is the updated video of what the garden looks like 2 years later.

creations landscape designshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11139499310787494719noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3127988646260445690.post-52873128932902844462024-02-02T08:54:00.000-08:002024-02-02T08:54:20.621-08:00DROUGHT TOLERANT TURF REBATE GARDEN
This garden was designed and installed by The Plant Nerd for the Municipal Water District of Orange County turf rebate program. The water district is offering rebates for killing your lawn and replacing it with drought tolerant plants. You can get up to $3 per square feet. If you have 600 square feet of turf or more, then you could get design assistance though The Plant Nerd at no cost to you.

Specifically, this garden features drought tolerant plant, a dry river bed and an energy efficient irrigation system. The dry creek bed stems from the gutters to allow for proper flow of the beauty of what mother nature is given us.

creations landscape designshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11139499310787494719noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3127988646260445690.post-69992289093976738432024-01-26T09:31:00.000-08:002024-01-26T09:31:58.292-08:005 THINGS YOU CAN DO TO HAVE A DROUGHT FRIENDLY GARDEN
When you are renovating your garden it is imperative to think about exactly what you are going to do. Having a plan to work with the drought is beneficial to the long term success of your garden. In this video I share with you 5 things that you can do to have a drought friendly garden.

These 5 things are valuable to the sustainment of any garden. The first is planting natives. There are thousands of natives that are very drought tolerant. Secondly, planting different flowering plants. The local wildlife will thank you. Third, having different heights of plants to allow for visual interest. Fourth thing you can do is add the right amount of plants and lastly patience.

creations landscape designshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11139499310787494719noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3127988646260445690.post-33573818206876282372024-01-12T09:11:00.000-08:002024-01-12T09:11:37.835-08:00WHY DESIGN MATTERS
In this video I share with you an experience I had with a potential client that led me to make this video. The simple thing is that no qualified, licensed, bonded and insured landscape contractor can accurately quote to do a major renovation in your garden without having a design plan.

With a design it is clear as to what varieties of plants and quantities are to be used. If you are installing hardscape, it is clear in a design how many square footage of hard surface material is being proposed and so on.

creations landscape designshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11139499310787494719noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3127988646260445690.post-41624900815932953342024-01-05T09:06:00.000-08:002024-01-05T09:06:50.855-08:00HUNTINGTON BEACH CLIENTS SUSTAINABLE NATIVE GARDEN
This client had met with me a few years ago to get some ideas on her back yard that she ended up renovating with her father. She quickly realized how much work is involved and decided not to DIY the front. Instead she had me do a design and hired a contractor to do the install. She had also signed up for the Municipal Water District of OC turf rebate program.

She had only one requirement being that she wanted to only use California native plants. That combined with a dry river bed and two rain barrels created a sustainable garden that is guaranteed to reduce her water bills and add to her property value. We also created a funky gravel driveway and used big chunks of the old concrete driveway to create a path from the street to the front door.

creations landscape designshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11139499310787494719noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3127988646260445690.post-40988630474882589962023-12-08T09:45:00.000-08:002023-12-08T09:45:11.923-08:00I REPLACED MY CEANOTHUS
I had transplanted a Ceanothus hoping that it would survive. Sadly, it did not. It died. That's the thing when you transplant anything. There is only a 50/50 chance that it will survive. You take a risk and hope for the best. So I posted a short about it being dead. I wanted to be transparent about my garden and even show you the times I fail.

This is the initial short I made...

At first I thought about replacing it with an edible plant. But then one day I was at Tree of Life Nursery with a client buying plants and saw this beauty of a Ceanothus that I just had to have. I wanted to experiment and see what would happen. That is what gardening is. A science lab of sorts, where you get to try things out and learn along the way.

This is the short of what the pot now looks like...

creations landscape designshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11139499310787494719noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3127988646260445690.post-59951670077069735352023-12-01T08:37:00.000-08:002023-12-01T08:37:30.407-08:00IRWD CLIENT GARDEN UPDATE
In October I decided to visit a garden that was installed 9 months ago. This garden is a mixture of California natives and a few non natives. In this case the homeowners were awarded $5 per square foot by the Irvine Ranch Water District for removing their turf, installing a sustainability feature and drought tolerant plants. This garden is for sure the envy of the neighborhood. This is an updated video of what the garden looks like.

This is the original video that I posted about the garden just after the installation

This is the video I shot in Oct. showing the garden update.

creations landscape designshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11139499310787494719noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3127988646260445690.post-20720383055107402582023-11-24T12:00:00.000-08:002023-11-24T12:00:01.824-08:00MY FAVORITE CA NATIVE PLANT
I love using native plants in any garden design. There are many varieties to choose from and I never thought I could pick just one. But here we happily are and I have. This Gambelia juncea 'Gran Canon' (Baja Bush Snapdragon) is my favorite California native plant.

This one gets 3-4' tall and wide with beautiful red flowers in the spring. It gets watered weekly in my potted garden and I have 2 in full sun and 2 in mostly shade. What I love most about this is that it has a funkiness to it. There is one in my garden that get purposely in your face as you walk up to my front door.

creations landscape designshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11139499310787494719noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3127988646260445690.post-36572376020207197032023-11-17T09:39:00.000-08:002023-11-17T09:39:22.016-08:00KURAPIA
Kurapia is my one of my favorite groundcovers, simply because it is a fabulous alternative to lawn. You can walk on it and so much more. It's really hardy and once established requires minimal water and maintenance. You can mow it to mimic the look of lawn or just let it be.

It typically gets no more than 1' tall and blooms most of the year. Because it blooms, it will attract pollinators. This is why some people who may be allergic to bees chose to mow it right as it is about to bloom. But you don't have to. You can just let me do it's thing.

creations landscape designshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11139499310787494719noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3127988646260445690.post-56249219545314534282023-11-10T13:22:00.003-08:002023-11-10T13:22:53.090-08:00SMALL SPACE GARDENING
If you think that you cannot garden because you have a small space, then think again. I live in a 424 square foot house with only a 100 square foot pad of concrete outside my front door to garden in. In this short video I show you my garden. There is room to dine and lounge. There is even a potting bench.

creations landscape designshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11139499310787494719noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3127988646260445690.post-42744399101728194012023-11-03T10:07:00.003-07:002023-11-03T10:07:14.047-07:00SOUTH OC CLIENTS GARDEN UPDATE
This small front garden got a makeover around 5 months ago and looks really good. All the plants survived and are looking fabulous. The intent was was to create a California native palette, use Kurapia ground cover alternative to create a path and have an area for the clients to sit and sip their morning cup of coffee before heading out for the day.

This is the original video of the post install.

This is the updated video taken Oct. 20223. I thought for sure that it would survive but sadly, it did not. So what do I replace it with? I could just replace it with another Ceanothus or perhaps something else. I have yet to figure that out. In the meantime I thought I would show you my dead plant. Hah! You can watch the video of my garden revamp here... garden revamp video

creations landscape designshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11139499310787494719noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3127988646260445690.post-56690458678705342852023-10-06T08:12:00.003-07:002023-10-06T08:12:55.073-07:00MY GARDEN REVAMP OCTOBER 2022
Recently, I found myself unhappy with the state of my garden. Things that worked in the past were no longer working. It was time for a change and time to replace some dead plants. I had a plan in mind that shifted as I got to work.

The only clear thing was that I was going to by everything (plants excluded) second hand. I did not need a lot of stuff but just a few things. I also wanted to consolidate some of the pots I had.

The chair, rug and side table I purchased from Facebook marketplace, the edible plants are from Plant Depot and the natives are from Tree of Life.

creations landscape designshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11139499310787494719noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3127988646260445690.post-68164776255699203332023-09-22T08:50:00.003-07:002023-09-22T08:50:23.177-07:00SKETCHBOOK TOUR SEPTEMBER 2023
I tried to make a separate YouTube channel to post art content, but that did not work. I was not making enough content to make it work. So, I decided to sprinkle in that content here on my landscape design YouTube channel and blog. I love making art and in this video I show you the art that I have made in two sketchbooks.

Also and this is really exciting to me to share.... I have an Etsy shop that is live. This is so exciting for me to share.

creations landscape designshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11139499310787494719noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3127988646260445690.post-53042502517242087172023-09-15T09:35:00.000-07:002023-09-15T09:35:05.922-07:00LONG BEACH CLIENTS GARDEN UPDATE
I recently visited a garden in Long Beach that was designed by me and installed by Greenside Landscaping at the beginning of this year. I love going back to see how my design worked and how the plants faired.

For the most part everything did great with a few exceptions. In any garden you always assume that not all the plants will last. A few casualties is normal. This garden is no different. That being said I still love it and would say this is the envy of the neighborhood.

creations landscape designshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11139499310787494719noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3127988646260445690.post-80278351347096952562023-08-04T09:28:00.002-07:002023-08-04T09:28:16.570-07:00LAST FRIDAY OF JULY IN MY BUSINESS
On Fridays I do not do any design work. Those are the days that I work on my business. From billing, to scheduling my next week etc. Everything on that sort is done on Fridays. These are also the days that I upload a YouTube video and write a blog post, although that does not happen every week.

creations landscape designshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11139499310787494719noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3127988646260445690.post-2067999290305317832023-07-14T09:49:00.002-07:002023-07-14T09:49:58.453-07:00JUNE/JULY ART VLOG
When I started this blog and the YouTube channel, I had one goal in mind. Promote my landscape design business. So off I went on making posts and videos to do that. It worked like a charm. That being said, I have over the last few years felt like there needs to be a shift. A shakeup in content to keep me interested in making more vids and posts. During these few years I have also started an art business. Selling prints of my art as well as custom made sketchbooks.

I am still going to share my landscape design content with you, but at least once a month or so I would like to introduce some sort of art vlog into the mix. In this video I share with you some art things that I have been doing during the month of June and July.

creations landscape designshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11139499310787494719noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3127988646260445690.post-90581910957060149532023-07-07T08:01:00.002-07:002023-07-07T08:01:30.331-07:00SMALL FRONT GARDEN MAKEOVER IN OC
This garden is small but mighty. It was fun. Visiting a state that I had never been to. I got to go to some botanical gardens, each nice food and visit some cool cafe's. I did not vlog every ounce of my trip, but some of it.

creations landscape designshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11139499310787494719noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3127988646260445690.post-64945077957116062652023-05-05T09:08:00.005-07:002023-05-05T09:08:45.479-07:00FRONT GARDEN MAKEOVER IN DANA POINT
This front garden in Dana Point got a makeover just under 3 months ago. The client had a simple yet clear brief. She wanted a California native garden alongside a groundcover area with soft set flagstone to put a small bistro table and chairs. The existing hardscape was going to remain, which meant that the new flagstone had to coordinate with it. The groundcover used in this case is Kurapia (in plugs) that once filled in will create a beautiful lounging area with the flagstone.

creations landscape designshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11139499310787494719noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3127988646260445690.post-16404129163816496252023-04-28T10:15:00.000-07:002023-04-28T10:15:55.941-07:00SUNDAY IN A LIFE + VISITING THE SPRING GARDEN SHOW
Sunday April 23, was the last day of the South Coast Plaza spring garden show and I decided to go visit and take you along with me. So many gardens to see. So many different ideas that you could get for your space. The gardens are (on the first floor) are each paired with a home store that provides the furnishings. On the second floor are retail booths selling plants and garden accessories. Along with the garden show I also take you painting with me, while at a coffee shop.

creations landscape designshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11139499310787494719noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3127988646260445690.post-17461811581763662482023-04-07T11:03:00.004-07:002023-04-07T11:03:47.807-07:00OC CNPS 2023 GARDEN TOUR
On April 1st, the Orange County chapter of the California Native Plant Society had it's annual garden tour. In the previous few years due to covid they did not have an in person tour. Finally, they got back to it. There were 16 gardens on tour but I only visited 6. 2 in Irvine, 2 in Lake Forest and 2 in Costa Mesa.

Each garden was uniquely curated to suit the taste of the owner. Some were designed by a landscape designer and installed by a landscape contractor, and some where done as a DIY. Each garden took into account how much sun/shade the plants were going to get. Some even had existing plants that had to be worked around. In this video I give you a tour of the 6 that I went to.

creations landscape designshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11139499310787494719noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3127988646260445690.post-29384350265717903722023-03-24T11:39:00.003-07:002023-03-24T11:39:49.200-07:00HOW I ORGANIZE MY PHONE
Last week I did a video about how I organize my tablet and this week I thought I would show you how I organize my phone.
