There are over 600 different varieties of California native plants and with that many to choose from, how do you know what to pick.  Well I have selected 10.  Top 10 California native plants to try in your garden.  These plants are low maintenance, drought tolerant and useful for various situations (shade, scent etc.).

As with any garden remember that nothing is set in stone.  Gardening is like a science lab. You get to experiment and try different things. Somethings you may like or dislike.  Something might work well or not at all.  In either case have fun with your garden and if you are patient then you will see results and a beautiful garden to enjoy with your loved ones.

These 10 plants are;

  • Arctostaphylos densiflora 'Howard McMinn' - McMinn Manzanita
  • Ceanothus concha - Ceanothus
  • Erigeron 'Arthur Menzies' - Seaside Daisy
  • Eriophyllum nevenii - Catalina Silverlace
  • Festuca rubra 'Patrick's Point' - Patrick's Point Fescue
  • Frageria californica - Woodland Strawberry
  • Galvezia juncea 'Gran Canon' - Baja Bush Snapdragon
  • Hesperaloe parviflora - Red Yucca
  • Heuchera opal - Coral Bells
  • Salvia clevelandii - Cleveland Sage

Love your site. There are over 6,000 species of California native plants, not just 600. :)

Arvind you are correct. Error on my part. But I do believe that there are 600 varieties that are native to Orange County. There are just so many. How does one keep track of them all?

Love this! I have played several natives in my yard including romnyea coulteri, which I am especially proud of because I got it to take (after three failed attempts). I have rain barrels and a gray water system ( for fruit trees and hedge) a raised bed from cinder block and three vitus vinifera but oh do I so need a designer to help me pull it all together!
