VARIOUS FRUIT USES

I have always wondered what fruits are used for other than a food source. As I was searching to fuel my curiosity I came across this article that seamed very fascinating. The article written by Micheal Reilly at MSNBC talks about how watermelons could become the new source of ethanol fuel.

"According to a new study, leftover watermelons from farms' harvests could be converted into up to 2.5 million gallons of clean, renewable ethanol fuel every year destined for your car, truck, or airplane's gas tank."

This would surely be a much more sustainable alternative. Cleaner, better and greener!

Other fruit uses...
  • Peaches used in organic shampoos and soaps
  • Pomegranate extract used in exfoliating scrubs
  • Lime used as a disinfectant (it's acidic and the acid kills germs)
  • Tomatoes are good for removing skunk odor
  • Cucumbers over the eyes while napping is said to be good
  • An apple a day keeps the doctor away
  • Mulberries are really good for constipation

ORANGE COUNTY NATIVE PLANTS

I live in Orange County, CA and I got to thinking that it might be nice to list plants that are native to this region. There are over a thousand plants that are native to Orange County and as I was sifting through the site I came across this one that made me crave nuts. Literally!

Juglans californica - Southern California Black Walnut

Deciduous tree that grows 8-25 feet high and 20 foot spread, takes full sun to partial shade and needs watering once a month

Click here to see to search for native plants in your California county. You could easily get distracted sifting through many pages, but then again it is fun and educational and a neat way to pass time. Perhaps you can invite your kids to join with you in your search.
